YouTube Paid Subscription Channels: Our initial thoughts... Yesterday (Thurs, 9 May 2013), YouTube announced its first paid Partner Channels. This is no doubt a bold and controversial move and one which will be watched closely by all digital video and entertainment commentators. The immediate questions are no doubt going to be:1. Will YouTube consumers actually be willing to pay for their content?2. Will the content producers (YouTubers) be satisfied with the commercial split on revenues (about which YouTube remains tight lipped but has indicated that it will be similar to current advertising revenue splits i.e. 45% to YouTube)?3. Will the content stay ad free?4. Because the content creators are setting their own subscription prices, what will be the optimum price point, if any?As a starting point, it is interesting to look at the choices for these initial participating Channels. Unsurprisingly, the content is coming from some premium sources with existing track records on YouTube. For example, UFC's offering, UFC Select, promises to provide access to classic fights and the hit reality show The Ultimate Fighter. Of course, if this content can be freely streamed elsewhere, it is going to impact on consumers willingness to pay. We are acutely aware that making good, high quality content costs money and it should not come as a surprise that larger organizations are seeing YouTube as another paid distribution route. We do wonder, however, whether consumers are going to be as willing to pay to watch their favorite vlogger as they are to watch their favorite satellite TV show on YouTube instead of through their satellite provider?Perhaps the biggest potential issue we see is over ambitious pricing. Some Channels will cost as much as $7.99 a month. On Sky TV in the UK or Comcast in the US, for example, you can subscribe to a Channel package which comprises multiple Channels, for the same price. You have to compare YouTube's move to other paid platforms in order to assess potential success. YouTube consumers tend to subscribe to many more Channels than the typical TV consumer watches. Will this therefore make YouTube's new model completely unaffordable to the young demographic which got it to where it is today? We do also wonder, how this is going to impact upon UGC and traditional Viral Content? We suspect that if that content remains free, which presumably it will, it will remain as strong as ever.

Gang-busters? I was interviewed this past Sunday morning on SKY News about the new single 'Gentleman', released last week by the ubiquitous PSY, deliberately known for his outrageous dance moves and catchy beats, which may or may not have contributed to the 1.5BN views his first single attracted on YouTube. Specifically, the discussion last weekend centered around the 35 year-old K-Pop artist's likelihood of enjoying an enduring GLOBAL career in the music industry, having already topped the charts with several albums in his homeland. Ironically, and I'm told by coincidence, the lady who interviewed me hailed from South Korea herself, and chose to take the Fifth Amendment when I asked her whether she was proud of his achievements, as a fellow countryman.Of course there have been some performers who have transitioned from YouTube cover artists, to global superstars (I will even admit to having been a Belieber myself on the odd occasion), and there are many more YouTubers that I and the Viral Spiral team have come across, who have simply blown us away with their vocal talents. However, those talents have been the focus of their performances, rather than uncontrollable antics. I don't mean to be entirely negative, because the tunes do get one's feet tapping, but if PSY is to establish himself on the world scene, I'd suggest that he reconsider his approach, just like he was forced to reconsider the title of his new single (originally called "Assarabia") for political reasons, if nothing else.Real name Park Jae-sang, his stage name PSY is actually based on the word "psycho". Something else to perhaps revisit?DamianFounder & CEOViral Spiral
